** Due to the focus on alignment, this will be a hands-on workshop, and in-person attendance is highly recommended. **
As a yoga teacher or practitioner, you have almost certainly experienced some aspects of Iyengar Yoga even if you haven't studied it or taken an Iyengar class. This approach emphasizes proper progression and alignment for a safe and effective yoga practice, and its orginator, B.K.S. Iyengar, developed many of the yoga props used today, such as belts, blocks, straps, and blankets.
This workshop will introduce the basic elements of asana practice according to the principles of the Iyengar method. Precision of alignment, correct use of props, logical sequencing, modifications to meet individual need, safety, and the way in which yoga's philosophical roots are embedded in the physical work will be addressed.
In the first part, a typical Iyengar sequence of asanas will be taught. Standing
poses, which are the foundation of the method, will be followed by seated asanas and inversions with alternatives given to students for whom inverted poses are contraindicated. Supine poses and savasana will conclude the first half of the workshop.
The second part will be a combined interactive teaching practicum and general Q&A during which students will be able to take notes.
A recording will be shared with all participants for two weeks following the workshop.
Recommended props: a non-skid yoga mat, 3–4 firm blankets, and one block (preferably cork or wood).
